A new nacelle back-end

Since Tvindkraft has stood tall for almost five decades, it is always in need of repairing, revising, and rethinking. During the autumn of 2022, we got a brand new cone for the back-end of the nacelle to substitute the original, 45-year old piece.

The old back-end had suffered severely with decades of harsh, Danish winters, salty and relentless oceanic wind, and flocks of curious birds. Consumed by rust, algae, and guano, it really needed some refreshing – or rather, some substituting.

Being a unique prototype of its own, our windmill requires constant maintenance, which often comes with a lot of creative thinking and problem solving. This time, the piece just couldn’t be saved and a new one had to be created.

Luckily, Stakroge Blacksmith and Machinery could assist us and do the job perfectly. The company is based nearby and works mainly with installing heating systems and plumbing. They created a new and shiny nacelle back-end, and supported us all the way with the process of unmounting the old piece and substituting it with the new one.

The whole process involved a crane, a crew of skilled and brave workers, patience and time. A huge thank you to Stakroge, and all others who helped us complete the job! It was a difficult project, but it really needed to be done. It allows us to keep Tvindkraft up-to-date and well-maintained. Now, the wind turbine is functional again, and can keep producing clean electricity for many years to come.

Here, you can see the back of the windmill’s head with its brand-new end-piece. You can notice the slight difference in the colour of the newly painted red stripes. It looks much better than before, and it is ready to withstand many more years of wind, frost, and birds. Tvindkraft is shining again, and we are looking forward to at least five more decades of keeping it well-polished and productive!

For half a century’s time, it has never ceased
Its laborious duty, without a moment’s ease
Tirelessly toiling, day and night
It has worked, with no pause in sight

Britta, who is one of the windmill caretakers, with the old back-end that has done its duty for 45+ years.
